Be sure the outside doors of your home, garage or business are locked.

Keep spare keys with a trusted neighbor, not under a planter, on a ledge or in a mailbox.

Keep bikes and sports equipment inside when not in use.

Eliminate places that an intruder may hide, such as spaces in shrubbery. 

Illuminate stairways, alleys and entryways.

Set timers on lights while you are away from home.

Suspend mail and/or newspaper deliveries while you are on vacation.

Ask police for additional neighborhood patrols.

If you have a keyless entry vehicle, keep keys on the nightstand.  If you hear someone trying to get in your home hit the alarm button after calling 911.  This will alert neighbors of a problem.
