A NOTE
ABOUT OUR TOWN

Pearisburg,
Virginia is located at the approximate geographic center of
Giles County, Virginia. It is located on a plateau above the
New River at the intersection of US Route 460 and State
Route 100. Pearisburg, which is the County Seat of Giles
County, was established in 1808 when Giles County was formed
from parts of Montgomery and Tazewell Counties in Virginia
and Monroe County, West Virginia (then part of Virginia).
Pearisburg is located in the heart of the Appalachian
Mountains and is the northern most jurisdiction of the New
River Valley Planning District. Pearisburg offers it's
residents and visitors much in the way of outdoor
attractions. Angels Rest, the hill overlooking Pearisburg
from the west, is a pleasant yet invigorating day hike.
The New River offers area canoeists and kayakers an
ideal area to relax on a sunny day. A visit to Whitt
Riverbend Park on the River is recommended. The Appalachian Trail
runs through the outskirts of Pearisburg and hikers often
stop in town for a few days rest during the summer months.
For
the history buff, Pearisburg offers much in the way of Civil
War history and features the Andrew Johnston house. At left
is a photograph of Wenonah Avenue taken during the Civil War
era. The identity of the woman in the photograph is not
known. The building which formerly served as the county jail
can be seen beside the courthouse. Click on the photo for a

Pearisburg's
small-town charm is enhanced to a large degree by its
mountainous setting and the genuine hometown atmosphere that
prevails year round. Pearisburg is a relaxed community,
where local merchants often call their customers by their
first names and a friendly wave from a passing motorist is
an everyday thing.
Many people,
after relocating to Pearisburg, have said, "Small town, good
people... this is just the place we were looking for!"
